117 Classy Gentlemen
Since the Gophers are enjoying a well-deserved break from
all the winning, we also took a break from our weekly Classy Predictions
segment. However, there were a lot of stellar prognostications by the Classy
Gentlemen - and special guest picker Gopher Bandanna Guy - so let's spend a few
moments looking back at how smart we are.![]() |
Mustache Goldy approves of last week's picks. |
Everyone in the Classy Predictions Standings are now above
.500 thanks to confidence across the board for the Gophs. It's very convenient
that we started doing this a game into Minnesota's recent winning streak,
because we all look either very smart or pretty smart after three weeks. Next
week will be an interesting one to see how confident we remain against a very good
(and hated) Wisconsin team, and if our squad can continue to reward our
optimism.
Speaking of Classy, how about that Classy debut by Gopher Bandanna Guy? His 22-17 prediction was the closest to the 24-10 final score,
and we're awarding him with the overall win this week. Well played, sir.
Perhaps it's time to double-down on headwear and add a top hat to your
ensemble? Gopher Bandanna Guy also had the best Minnesota prediction, with his
22 points just two off the Gophers' total. Meanwhile, the youngest Gentlemen also had good weeks. The 1-year-old came closest to Penn State's score. Congratulations, Brooks. You showed the most confidence in the defense and they rewarded you handsomely. Brag about that at daycare Monday. And Kellen accurately called a fourth-quarter fumble recovery to help seal the win. Brag about next week on your next installment of The Constable and The Kellen.
In terms of other predictions, Rap nailed the fact that the
Gophers would never trail and picked another Phil to Maxx TD. Party's 25-30
carries for around 100-yard prediction for Cobb was pretty close, and he
accurately predicted a, "bend but don't break defense." Higgy
overshot Nelson's numbers, but Phil did get one on the ground and one to Maxx.
And Bruiser correctly predicted all of Penn State's players and gear could
travel home in Bill O'Brien's chin.

Will Saturday result in more fun on the field? |
Just for fun, let's take a look at the college football
landscape in relation to our favorite team. No one should read anything into
this beyond the facts. I'm not saying Minnesota is equal to or better than any
of the teams listed below. Instead, I'm listing this because before the season
started if someone presented this list to you and said, after 10 games do you
think Minnesota will have the same record as these teams and a better record
than these teams, even the most glass-half-full of us would have said no.
TEAMS WITH THE SAME
RECORD (8-2) AS MINNESOTA: Stanford, South Carolina, Texas A&M, UCLA, Oklahoma,
Wisconsin.
TEAMS WITH A WORSE
RECORD THAN MINNESOTA: LSU, Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame, Texas, Miami, USC,
Boise State, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State, Virginia Tech,
Kansas State, Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia, BYU, Oregon State, Washington,
Ole Miss.
We're definitely not saying that we're better or equal to
the teams listed above. But this four-game winning streak and eight-win season
has been pretty damn cool, and here's another fun way to try and quantify our
success.
Here's a look at the full Classy Prediction Standings. Hope
everyone enjoyed the bye week. An extra week to reflect on what we've
accomplished and to refocus for the HUGE week ahead has been nice. Keep
thinking happy thoughts and preparing your maroon and gold formal wear for a
week from today.
